Edwin Longsden Long Oil Paintings

Edwin Longsden Long: (English Artist, 1829 - 1891), Edwin Longsden Long began his career painting portraits and Spanish subjects. However, he became successful with very large historical and biblical subjects. His painting ‘Babylonian Slave Market’ was the most expensive painting ever sold in 19th Century Victorian England. His choice of subject matter was indebted to the example of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, while his style closely resembles that of Edward Armitage. His success enabled him to commission two houses (1878 and 1887), both in Hampstead, from Richard Norman Shaw. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1876 and member of the Royal Academy in 1881. Today his works hang in the museum collections of Aberdeen, Bristol, the National Portrait Gallery and the University of London, England; Melbourne and Sydney, Australia; and, the Dahesh Museum in New York.
